Painting Materials and Methods with Jill Pottle

This course is for beginning and returning painters/artists who want to acquire fundamental painting skills and conceptual understanding of contemporary approaches to painting with oils or acrylics.

 

 

Observational Drawing in Colored Pencil with Helen Byers
Saturday, May 31 - Monday, June 2, 10AM-3PM $225 Members, $250 Nonmembers
Using Fruitlands Museum collections and natural materials as inspiration, students will build and hone drawing skills in our new art class by local artist Helen Byers. Still-life subjects will be objects borrowed from Fruitlands’ rich collections as well as items from the Museum’s natural environment. Explore traditional media, including charcoal, graphite, and colored pencil as you learn the basics of drawing techniques, composition, line, proportion and value. A list of recommended supplies will be sent to participants. Appropriate for all levels.

 

 

Field Sketching with Helen Byers
Saturday, July 12 - Sunday, July 13, 10AM-3PM

This course combines science and art in a unique approach to learning about the natural world. Participants will explore the landscape of Fruitlands Museum while experimenting with different field sketching techniques. Participants will draw on the long tradition of documenting observations about the natural world in a sketchbook. Much of the course will occur in the field studying the Nashua River Valley, the Fruitlands hillside, and the flora and fauna on the museum campus. By learning new ways to study surroundings, sharing, and building on working methods, workshop participants will come away better equipped to appreciate and experience natural environments. Artists of all levels, including absolute beginners, are welcome to attend.

Abstract Landscape Painting with Richard Kattman

Artist-in-Residence Richard Kattman leads participants through the essential steps of replicating the essence of the Fruitlands landscape in acrylics on canvas in this one-day plein air painting workshop. Together, participants will search for the DNA of the landscape and express through paint and brush the connections between mind, spirit, and nature. All skill levels welcome. A supply list will be provided with registration.

 

 

 

 

Plein Air Painting Workshop with Jill Pottle
July 22-24, 10AM-3PM

Enjoy the outdoors in this three-day workshop painting on location and viewing the amazing vista of Fruitlands. Working on location helps to build skills in perspective, recording information quickly and capturing the rich natural light. Students will learn how to simplify forms, develop overlapping areas of trees and hills to create depth, emulate color relationships in the water, sky and land and other compositional issues. Participants will learn how to get going quickly and how to capture the scenery fast with big shapes and ideas. Join us and find out how exciting it is to capture a moment in time in nature.
