Volunteer Opportunities at Fruitlands

Volunteer at Fruitlands!
Fruitlands Museum thrives on the work force of its Volunteers. Most service is done outdoors - clearing trails, gardening and keeping the grounds maintained. Other volunteering opportunities include office assistance, sponsorship and overseeing the children’s arts and crafts activities. Those interested in one-day commitments are encouraged to check out our events and fundraisers. Our volunteers range from young adults to seniors who used the museum for both recreation and education. Serving as volunteers is their way of saying thanks, and involving themselves in a meaningful way with an institution whose goals they support.

Some current needs include:
Summer Concert Volunteers
Five volunteers needed each Thursday evening from June 13 – July 25 from 5:00-7:30pm. Four volunteers will help direct traffic into proper parking areas for concerts. Four stations need coverage: main drive to direct traffic toward member/non-member/band/handicapped parking areas; parking assistant at the member area, two parking assistants at the non-member area. One volunteer is needed to staff a museum information table. Need to be onsite by 5:00 as picnic grounds open at 5:30. Concerts begin at 7:15 pm. Volunteers are welcome to stay for the concert or can leave at 7:30.
Library Catalogue Volunteer
Help organize and catalogue the books and CDs in education department’s library. Tasks include manual data collection and data entry into library management software.
Visitor Center Greeter/Orientation Volunteer
Welcome guests to the Wayside Visitor Center and provide them with an orientation to the museum using the orientation exhibit as a guide. Ensure that they know about the gator service (on weekends), know where the bathrooms are, are informed about any upcoming events, etc.
Family Learning Center helper
Help guests with crafts and art projects in our new Family Learning Center.
Volunteer Trail Guides
Volunteers needed to give guided trail walks on the first and third Saturday of each month? Walks will have educational theme and training will be provided.
Education Admin Volunteer
Help assemble contact lists and update existing lists for various target markets. Contact local organizations, schools, etc. to get most up-to-date information so education staff can send out information about programs and events to interested parties.
Native American outdoor activities volunteer
Work with the public at our Native American longhouse area demonstrating traditional craft and handwork using replica artifacts. Task range from demonstrating food preparation (corn grinding, small cooking demonstrations) to hunting techniques (throwing an atl’atl, bow and arrow demonstration) to showing basic handcrafts (creating cordage from natural fibers, weaving). Volunteers needed to help on weekends, holidays and during the summer months. All training will be provided.
Craft festival artist liaison
This individual will be using material already created by Fruitlands staff to identify and reach out to local artists who may wish to participate in Fruitlands 2013 Craft Festival on September 28th and 29th. This project will involve some online research and phone calls/emails to local artists and artist groups. This work can be done at home, or onsite at the museum and will put the volunteer in touch with some extremely creative people!
