Our style of yoga at The Durga Studio is very much inspired by The Transcendental Movement of the 19th century. Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and many others set out to cultivate and find freedom of the spirit, each in their own way. A number of Transcendentalists found inspiration in the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most important and treasured Hindu scriptures; in fact, it was one of the few books Thoreau brought into Walden Woods for his year of meditation with nature. Writings from some of the ancient Sufi poets such as Hafiz and Kabir ~ who wrote of ecstatic devotion ~ were much revered and translated by the some of the Transcendentalists as well. The philosophy behind the old Hindu traditions and literature appears to have provided a basis from which the Transcendentalists formed many of their ideas of being and living.

Using the philosophy behind both yoga and the Transcendental Movement as a springboard for exploration, The Durga Studio welcomes all people, all ages and all levels, to join us here at Fruitlands as we discover our unique ways to journey back home to our spirits and hearts.
